Risk for STD in Middle Age Sexual Activity

In middle and old age, some people have the notion that they are immune to STD. But, studies have established that an increasing number of older people are contacting these diseases.

Published statistics of Center for Disease Control in 2003, the newly acquired cases of AIDS for different age group revealed some important trend.  The highest number of cases were found in the age group of 35 to 44 adults, the next age group that comes in to prominence is surprisingly the elderly group between the age 45 to 54 and the least affected group, believe the statistics, is younger group between the age 25 to 34.

Statistics for herpes patients in different age group is not available. However, take it that at least 20% of the population will have or acquire the disease in their lifetime. These herpes includes both oral of genital and acquired through sexual acts.

It is a revelation of some sort that in all new cases of Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, the middle aged and older age group are leading. They often get these diseases, while indulging heterosexual sexual activities with new partners of their age group. This age group has a false belief that they are immune to STD’s whereas they are actually more prone because of their declining immune system and already acquired old age related diseases.

Middle aged and older group do not seek medical advice promptly even if they are infected; making their spouses vulnerable to the disease they carry. It is established that very high percentage of 50 years plus age group are sexually active and 7 percent of that population is practicing unguarded sexual activity.  It seems that due to divorce or death of spouse or even unhappy relationships have led women to be polygamous and the risk for contamination has increased.
